There are different types of kindergartens with many ideas about how children learn and what children should learn. Some believe children should play and not engage too seriously in academic activities. Others believe the best years for significant learning are during the early childhood years because these are the years of tremendous brain development. So, who is right?

If children sit silently in rows, waiting for the teacher to give them information for memorization, they will learn to comply. After each test, children will also quickly forget what they memorized.

In this way of how children learn, teachers control and contain children’s behaviors. Children should do what they are told to do, and then do something else when they are told to do that. When children learn to comply, they do not learn about themselves. They are educated as if each child was the same person. But the reality is each child is a wonderful individual who can only learn in her or his own special way.

If children are active in an environment prepared for experiential learning with guiding educational materials, children will learn to be independent. In this way of how children learn, teachers guide children to develop habits of self-discipline. Teachers help children learn to make responsible choices. Independent children learn to think, solve their own problems, innovate solutions, work effectively with others, and much more.
